Traditions play a very important role in the make-up of any country or culture. Values, beliefs, customs, and lifestyle are all elements that create identity and community. In Costa Rica the spirit for peace and democracy are highly valued.
Traditions can be seen throughout the country, especially in smaller towns and villages. Celebrations take the form of both religious and patriotic celebrations. These traditions which may include recognition of the Patron Saint, masquerades, carnivals, oxcart parades, and weekly fairs of fruits and vegetables are all part of the identity of rural Costa Rican culture and are traditions that no visitor should miss.
